Valentine Heart Graphing on a Sticky Wall

Kids gravitate towards sticky wall activities. The sensory experience of sticking their hands or paper to the contact paper and pulling it away is something extra special.

What You’ll Need for This Valentine’s Day Graphing Activity

  • contact paper
  • paper in a variety of colors (card stock or thick scrapbook paper works well)
  • painter’s tape
  • heart punch
  • ruler
  • marker
  • container

Set up the sticky wall by taping contact paper to the wall with the sticky side facing out. Be sure to use a tape that won’t damage your wall. Painter’s tape is usually a safe choice.

Use a heart-shaped paper punch to cut out lots of hearts in a variety of colors. I did a random number of each color. If you don’t have a paper punch, you can cut out the hearts by hand or buy pre-cut hearts. Foam hearts would work on the sticky wall, too. Thicker paper is easier to remove from the sticky wall, but thin paper works okay. Construction paper will leave paper fuzzies on your contact paper.

Use a ruler or straight edge of your paper, to draw the x and y axes on the graph.

After drawing lines on the sticky paper to create a graph, I added color labels at the bottom. Then I showed Lily (age 4.5) what to do with one heart.

She added the rest of the hearts to the graph.

I added numbers along the left side and taught her how to read the graph.

How many pink hearts are there? You can count them or you can look at the number on the side. Once we were done, Lily wanted to take off the hearts and do it again. This time she let her little brother (age 2.5) add the hearts. They had fun adding and removing hearts for quite a while.
