Children’s Books About Unicorns

My daughter first fell in love with dragons when she was almost 3. It started with a bedtime story told by her dad. After that, we checked out every dragon book we could find. Check out our favorite dragon books here.

Naturally, she progressed to other magical creatures. She’s now equally fond of unicorns. We’ve been checking out unicorn books for a while now, so I thought it was time to share some of our favorites.

I’m starting the list with Miss Turie’s Magic Creatures by Joy Keller. We were sent this book for review. It’s a great read for anyone that loves magical creatures. Miss Turie guarantees to find the perfect magical pet for everyone who enters her shop, but her latest customer isn’t easily impressed. Miss Turie makes one suggestion after another to help him find the perfect match.

We first meet a unicorn who Miss Turie says is so last year. All you unicorn lovers out there know that unicorns are here to stay and will remain popular magical creatures forever. We also meet a dragon, a phoenix, a hydra, a chimera, and several more interesting creatures. I love that the author has included the history of each of the magical creatures at the end of the book. If your child seems stuck on unicorns, this book is a fabulous way to introduce creatures beyond the favorite unicorn.

Uni the Unicorn by Amy Krouse Rosenthal is a sweet story about a unicorn who believes in little girls even though everyone says they’re not real. She draws pictures of a little girl and dreams of playing with her. In the book, we learn there’s a little girl who believes in unicorns just as much as Uni believes in little girls.

Uni the Unicorn and the Dream Come True is the sequel to Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s first Uni the Unicorn book. Uni and the little girl finally get to meet! They must work together to save the Land of Unicorns from disaster.

Do You Believe in Unicorns? is the latest book from author/illustrator Bethanie Deeney Murguia. I love her illustrations and this book is no exception. Plus the storyline is intriguing. We follow a horse wearing a red hat. (Is it a horse? Why would a horse wear a hat?) We also meet other horses along the way but the tops of their heads are covered up by something like a hat, a rock, or a mountain peak. You’re left wondering if these horses are actually unicorns.

Goldilicious by Victoria Kann is one of several books featuring Pinkalicious – a little girl who loves the color pink. In the story, we meet Goldie, Pinkalicious’s imaginary unicorn friend. Pinkalicious is the only one who can see Goldie. They enjoy roller skating, fly kites, and have fun playing together. Her little brother, Peter, even joins in. This story is a great example of a child’s imagination.

Pinkalicious: School Rules! by Victoria Kann is part of the I Can Read series of beginning reader books. Fans of Pinkalicious and Goldilicious will enjoy this easy reader that features a trip to school for Pinkalicious and Goldie. Because everything is better with an imaginary unicorn!

Lily the Unicorn by Dallas Clayton is a fun read about making new friends and experiencing life. Lily the Unicorn loves to make things. She likes music and getting messy. Lily loves making new friends most of all. When she meets Roger the penguin, she plans lots of adventures for them to do together. The problem is Roger doesn’t like anything. He is afraid of trying new things. What if something bad happens? What if he tries and fails? Each page of the book has large text with the main idea and then lots of small pictures and captions to support what the characters are saying. That many pictures can be a bit overwhelming to readers, but they do a really great job of letting you see into the mind of the characters. You get a good feel for who Lily and Roger are.

Not Quite Narwhal by Jessie Sima is sweet story about Kelp, a unicorn born into a family of narwhals. Kelp knew he was a bit different but he always thought he was a narwhal until one day when he was swept away by a current. He saw a creature on land that looked just like him. He swam to meet the land narwhals who he finds out are called unicorns. Kelp is torn between staying on land or returning to the sea.

Unicorn Thinks He’s Pretty Great by Bob Shea is a story about a jealous goat. Unicorn can do everything better than Goat can. How can Goat compete with someone who can fly to school or make it rain cupcakes? Unicorn smells Goat’s pizza and asks for a piece. This gets them to talking and Goat learns that Unicorn doesn’t think so highly of himself. Goat ends up encouraging Unicorn and they become friends. I love how this story highlights the emotions of Goat and Unicorn so well. We all feel inadequate at times. Having a friend helps make everything better.

Zoey and Sassafras: Unicorns and Germs is the sixth book in the chapter book series by Asia Citro. We have received a complimentary copy from the publisher. In this story, Zoey meets a baby unicorn with an infected cut. (Who knew unicorns – even baby ones – were giant?) Zoey must conduct an experiment to test what treatment will help get rid of the infection. I love the combination of real science and magical story telling. This series makes a fantastic read aloud. My 4 year old is a huge fan. They are also perfect for independent readers. My 8 year enjoys reading them on his own.
