DIY Platform Bed with Storage

It was time for a new bed. We wanted something lower to the ground and with extra storage. I wasn’t happy with the options available for sale. My sweet husband built us a new bed to go along with the new mattress Sleep On Latex sent us for review. Check out our DIY Platform Bed with Storage and read about our 100% natural latex foam mattress.

I knew I wanted a lower bed. At five-two, I needed a step stool to climb into our old bed. (Fun fact: my water broke climbing into bed while pregnant with my oldest.) Our new mattress didn’t need a box spring so the profile was already going to be lower. While searching online we came across plans for a platform bed from Lowe’s. We loved the look of the bed. And it had a great amount of storage.

After watching the video and reading the plans, we decided this was the bed we wanted. My husband got to work purchasing materials and building the bed.

The bed is made with 3/4″ finish grade oak plywood.

We decided to use a black cherry wood stain with 3 coats of water based polyurethane.

Once the polyurethane was completely dry, we moved the bed into our room for assembly.

Two pieces of plywood go on top of the slats you see above. Trim pieces were added and then the mattress can go on top.

The platform bed plans from Lowe’s also include a wood headboard. We were thinking about doing a fabric covered headboard. A quilted fabric headboard is one option we’re considering. The other option is just staining and finishing the headboard to match the rest of the bed. I haven’t found any fabric that screams buy me yet. Also we need quite a bit of fabric to cover the headboard. I think it’s easier to just stain the headboard. My husband thinks it’s easier to cover it in fabric.

Add a Brilliant Latex Mattress to Your New Bed

Sleep On Latex sent us a new mattress in exchange for a review. Their mattresses are made with Pure Green® Natural Latex Foam. It is 100% natural latex harvested from rubber trees in Sri Lanka. There are no synthetic latex, fillers, or fire retardants. This means it’s free from the harmful emissions found in other types of mattresses. This was a huge selling point for us.

The latex foam is covered with a layer of organic wool and organic cotton. Wool is a natural fire retardant so there’s no need for the chemical fire retardants found in other mattresses.

Sleep on Latex mattress on DIY platform bed

The first night we slept on the new Sleep On Latex mattress, I felt wonderful. I laid down on my bed and body started to release pressure and relax. I love the constant support the latex mattress provides.

My old mattress had become lumpy and uneven. My back hurt when I woke up. The Sleep On Latex mattress is amazingly comfortable. I get a restful night’s sleep.

The mattress comes delivered to you rolled up in a box. Open the box, remove the plastic, and watch the magic unfold.

One other cool thing about the latex foam mattress is that you can’t feel movement from one side of the bed to the other. If your partner rolls over, you probably won’t notice it.

Top 3 Reasons we Chose a 100% Natural Latex Mattress from Sleep On Latex

  1. VOC free (no harmful emissions)
  2. Highly durable and lasts a long time (10 year warranty but probably will last much longer)
  3. Biodegradable

Final Touches to Complete the Look

We moved into a new house this past summer. We are updating each room in the house as we have time and money. Our bedroom needed a new coat of paint. The dull mustard yellow made our room drab.

Our new gray color makes the room so much brighter. The paint was actually inspired by the comforter set I found on clearance at Target. I was drawn to the greens and grays.

We also added curtains from Target. The medallions add interest to the room.

Last (for now), I placed some gray baskets in some of the cubbies under the bed. They are great for hiding random things. I have diapers in one of them and paper for the printer in another one.

I still have 3 things planned for this corner of the room. (1) A headboard needs to be added. (2) I want to add floating shelves on either side of the bed to serve as side tables. The platform bed is a bit wider than our old bed, so our old dresser doesn’t fit in the corner. A tall jewelry box doubled as my side table. It was perfect for my tall bed, but it no longer works for our shorter platform bed. (3) Finally, I need to choose some art for the walls. I’ll update this post with a new picture when these items are completed.
