Cardboard Box Maze and Play Tunnel

The next time you have a few large cardboard boxes hanging around, save them for play. You can easily make a cardboard box maze and play tunnel like we did. This is a great project for the whole family.

I was unpacking a large box the other day {yes I still have boxes from our move last July}, and Aiden claimed the empty box for himself. We all know how much fun kids have with cardboard boxes, so I let him entertain himself for awhile. Then, I brought in a few more empty boxes from the garage. The previous tenants left a pile of unused apple boxes {I’m guessing for the lovely apple tree in the front yard}. These boxes were the perfect size for Aiden to move around the room. He created a fence surrounding himself.

We’ve been having fun with mazes lately, too. I asked Aiden if he wanted to help me make a tunnel maze. Upon hearing “tunnel” and “maze,” he excitedly turned his attention to me. I put cardboard boxes together around the room. I used the “fence” apple boxes for the corners. I cut holes in the sides of some of the boxes to make doors, windows, and skylights.

All put together the cardboard box maze or play tunnel {as the maze was really quite simple} looks like this:

Here’s one of the corners. You can also see the skylight. We put another box on top of the skylight and you have a little place to stand up.

When Patrick {aka Daddy} came home, he and Aiden played with the boxes. They changed up the design, added a step ladder, and created a lookout tower.

There’s so many different ways to play with cardboard boxes. Mazes, towers, and play tunnels are just a few. How have you played with boxes?
