Construction Site Build and Count

This week the Virtual Book Club for Kids is featuring Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker. Try out our construction site build and count activity inspired by the book. It’s a great way to practice number recognition and counting while building with blocks. Also be sure to check out all of the other construction themed ideas at the end of the post. Affiliate links are included in this post.

Construction Site Build and Count

After reading Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, I set up a counting activity for Lily (age 2.5). We gathered up our trucks and blocks and set to play. I created a Counting Circles PDF that we used as well. You may print it out for your own personal or classroom use.

First, we pushed the trucks around, picked up some blocks, and put the blocks in the back of a pickup truck (the same truck we used for our Little Blue Truck Farm Animal Races). As Lily placed the blocks in the truck, we counted them.

I set out one of the numbers from the Counting Circles PDF and asked Lily what it was. Then, I asked her to push 4 blocks onto the circle. We repeated this for several of the numbers.

For other numbers, we stacked the blocks.

We also built houses and counted them.

I love the versatility of this construction activity. You can build and count with anything really. Do you have a stash of milk caps or rocks? How about dominoes? Try our Dump Truck Counting Game and see how many dominoes you can stack.
