All About Birds Scavenger Hunt

Hi, I’m Terri from Creative Family Fun and I’m thrilled to be here so Trisha can have some cuddle time with her new little one. I love exploring nature with my two girls, ages 4 and 6. My preschooler has expressed quite an interest in birds recently. So, to expand on her interest and to explore the birds beyond our backyard, we went on an “All About Birds” Scavenger Hunt.

We had to put out observations skills to the test. We were looking for nesting materials, such as dried grass, small twigs, pine needles, moss, and mud. We searched for food, such as berries, insects, and seed/grains. We had to use our ears to listen for birds singing and woodpeckers pecking. We also had to look up and search for nests. And, perhaps the most challenging part of all, was to look for birds.

We found moss in abundance and no one could resist getting down and touching it. We even found a nest, which further observation proved to be a squirrel’s nest. We decided to let that one count. It was a nest, after all. But, despite all the signs and sounds that we found, we didn’t see a single bird.

We went to our favorite local park with a good walking trail to do our hunt. A nice wooded area works great, but you can go on this scavenger hunt just about anywhere. Walk through your neighborhood. Take it along on a camping trip. Or, head down to your favorite park. Birds are everywhere and all the things they need to live are everywhere too!
