Ways to Make Ten with LEGO Minifigures

After Aiden created the Star Wars minifigure LEGO math game, I thought we could use the minifigures for more math learning. I wanted him to practice writing numbers while finding ways to make ten.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 10 minifigures
  • die or dice
  • LEGO baseplate
  • 10 2×2 LEGO bricks

How to Play:

Create your ten frame with a baseplate and 10 2×2 bricks.

Roll a die or 2 dice. If you use a 6 sided die, you may want to use two so you can practice with all numbers 1-10. If you roll an 11 or 12, just roll again.

The number you rolled represents the number of LEGO minifigures that will go on your ten frame to start. For example if you roll a 4, add 4 minifigures to the LEGO bricks.

Now determine how many more minifigures you need need in order to make ten. If you rolled a 4, you will need 6 more minifigures.

If you are able, you can differentiate between your minifigures. We used good guys for the first number and bad guys for the second number. This will help visualize the numbers. We could have also used Star Wars LEGO vs. super heroes or astronauts.

Write down the equation that represents the numbers. Aiden likes writing in a little notebook. I love that this helps encourage writing more.
