We love finding ways to encourage you to do science with your kids. Science Sparks and Inspiration Laboratories are asking you to share science activities with us. We’ll be issuing weekly challenges. Here’s how you can participate.
- Take pictures of your children doing the science challenges.
- Post the pictures to the social media of your choice {Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc.}
- Use the #ShareScience hashtag so we can find you. {Feel free to tag us as well.}
Bonus way to share with us: If you write a blog post about one of our challenges, let us know. We want to share it!

January 2015
January’s challenges have a frozen or winter theme.
Jan. 7th – 13th: Ice
- Try a simple ice melting experiment. How long does it take for ice to melt?
- Change up the surfaces for your ice melting experiment. Do different surfaces conduct heat differently?
- We have a color science investigation with ice and salt.

Jan. 14th – 20th: Snow
- What can you build with snow? How tall can you make the pile?
- Don’t have any outside? Make your own snow!
- What happens when you add water to snow? Try this simple snow and water experiment to find out.

Jan. 21st – 27th: Frozen or winter themed play dough or slime
- Make a fun themed play dough or slime
- What says frozen or winter to you?
Jan. 28th – Feb. 3rd: Freezing experiments
- Which liquid will freeze first?
- Will adding solids to water (sugar, salt, flour, cornstarch, etc) change how water freezes?
- What happens when you add salt to ice?
December 2014
For the month of December, the challenge is to do Christmas themed science.
- Think about the sights, smells, tastes, touches, and sounds of Christmas. Explore them.
- Follow along with our Christmas Science Advent calendar and choose an activity to do each day.

November 2014
Nov. 5th – Nov. 11th: Build a tower with blocks or LEGO. Read this #ShareScience post for building prompts and questions to ask.
Nov. 12th – Nov. 18th: Go leaf collecting. Make a collage or suncatcher to show off what you found.
- Read this post about collecting leaves to get an idea of all the science you can incorporate during the adventure.
- What kinds of leaves can you find? Can see what trees they belong to?
- What colors are the leaves? Can you find red, orange, yellow, brown, and green leaves?
Nov. 19th – Nov. 25th: Experiment with baking soda and vinegar.
- We have lots of ideas for how to play with with baking soda and vinegar. Check out our most popular post with 20 baking soda science ideas.
- What happens when you add vinegar to baking soda? Does the same thing happen when you add baking soda to vinegar?
- What happens when you add other ingredients to the baking soda and vinegar {like soap}?
- Build and volcano and use baking soda and vinegar for lava. {Here’s a easy to make tape volcano.}
Nov. 26th – Dec. 2nd: Build with play dough and straws or pipe cleaners.
- Set out an open invitation to build with the materials.
- What structures will your child create?
- Build landforms, trees, buildings, etc.
