Penguin Number Line Printable Game

We’re continuing our fun with penguins with a penguin number line printable. I made penguins holding the numbers 1-20. Cut them out and use them for number games. I’ll show you how we played the number line game below.

Penguin Math: Number Line Game

Supplies Needed:

I cut apart the little penguins with their numbers. There are 20 penguins with numbers plus 4 penguins without numbers.

Line the penguins up 1-20. We did this on the floor so we had plenty of space.

Ask your child to point to each number and say its name (starting at 1 and working your way to 20). This will give you a quick indicator if you child knows all of his numbers or which ones may need some practice.

Have your child choose a starting number. Place your marker below the number. We used a penguin without a number for our marker. You could also use a toy or whatever you like to mark your place.

Roll a die to choose a random number. (You could choose a number from a deck of cards or call out a number.) We used just one die to work on smaller numbers. You could use a pair of dice to work on larger numbers.

Move your place marker forward. This is a great opportunity to work on one to one correspondence and moving game pieces one space at a time.

What number did you land on?

Roll again and move forward again. Repeat this process until you reach the number 20.

Now roll a number and move backwards on the number line. Continue until you reach the number 1.

Keep going up and down the number line as many times as your child is interested.

Variations to Try

Ask: How many spaces do you need to move to get to ___ number? Elon loved figuring out what number he needed to roll to make it to 20.

Use the number line to solve an addition or subtraction problem. Example: 2+3+? Start your marker on the number 2. Move forward 3 spaces. Where do you land? The number 5, so 2+3=5.
