Doreen Cronin is one of my favorite children’s authors because her books are just so funny. Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type is the first book in her series in which Duck becomes the star. In this first book, the cows are looking for electric blankets to keep them warm. They use their typewriter to write a note to Farmer Brown demanding the blankets. Duck delivers a series of notes back and forth between the cows and Farmer Brown. Eventually they come to an agreement, but guess who ends up with the typewriter!

My daughter Lily is three and a half. I created a few activities for her to practice learning her name. She’s good at reading the letters but doesn’t always realize that L-i-l-y spells her name. For the first name recognition activity, I had her sort through our collection of Safari Ltd animal toys. (Safari Ltd has sent us several TOOBs over the years.) I wrote her name on a piece of paper and placed the farm animals nearby.

We talked about the letters on the paper and how they spelled Lily. I asked her to place the animals on the letters and showed her what I meant.

She had fun walking the farm animals over to the letters making their sounds and saying their names along the way.

She asked for her name to be bigger so she could add even more animals to the letters. I happily obliged.

We still had our sand out for our fossil hunting sensory bin, so I added some sand to a tray and placed her name underneath. I encouraged her to write her name with one of the farm animals.

I think she loved this idea even more than the first name recognition activity. In addition to drawing with the animals, I showed her how she could find her name in the sand. She practiced tracing and uncovering the letters.
