Counting Hearts – A Valentine Math Game for Preschool
Cheerios has limited edition with heart shapes mixed in with their regular o’s. The tiny little hearts inspired a valentine counting game. If you don’t have Cheerios with hearts, you can use heart-shaped gems or erasers. You could even just use regular Cheerios.
The printable counting mats have hearts that are about the same size as the Cheerios hearts. Placing the Cheerios inside the hearts is great for working on fine motor skills. Kids can practice strengthening their pincer grip.

First, you’ll want to sort the heart-shaped Cheerios from the regular o’s. You can have your child do this step, or you can do it before you introduce the counting activity.
Encourage your child to add hearts to the paper placing one Cheerios heart on top of each blue heart.
Ask your child to count the hearts as he goes.
You can also talk about the numbers you see on the printable.
Ask questions about the numbers and talk about what you are seeing your child do. “You added 5 hearts to the circle. How many hearts are left open?”
The printable works just as well with heart-shaped gems or erasers. Just look for something of a similar size.
