Llama Llama Red Pajama Color Words and Matching Game
This month the Virtual Book Club for Kids is featuring Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney. We used the book as a springboard for practicing color words and playing a color matching game. Affiliate links are included in this post. Clicking on the book titles or covers will take you to Amazon.
Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney
Llama Llama Red Pajama is the first book in Anna Dewdney’s series about a cute young llama. Baby Llama has just gone to bed when he calls down and asks for his mama. She doesn’t come right away, so poor Llama gets upset. Mama Llama comes and makes everything right again. If you like this book, you’ll like the rest of the series, too.
Color Words and Matching Game
My son has been working on colors words lately in kindergarten, so he came up with this activity to go along with the story. He asked me to draw pajamas like Llama Llama wears and then write color words on them. I have two sets of pajamas for you to download and use in your classroom or home. The first set has pajama tops and bottoms with color words. The second set has pajama tops and bottoms without any words.

Color Words Reading Practice
If your child is practicing color words, have him read the color words and color the pajamas appropriately.
Color Words Matching
If your child is just learning color words, create a matching game for him. You can color the pajama tops or you can tell your child what color to use. Have your child match the colored tops with the uncolored bottoms by matching the words.
You can lay out the colored pajama tops and make a pile for the pajama bottoms. Then, your child can read the color words on the pajama bottoms and match them to the colored tops.
Pajama Color Matching
If your child isn’t ready for color words yet, you can practice just matching the colors. Use either the pajamas with the color words or the pajamas without the color words. Color the tops and bottoms to match (your child can help). Have your child match the pajama tops with the pajama bottoms and tell you what color she is using.
Or you can match just the pajama tops. You can also talk about the color words as you play.
Extend this activity by asking your child: What else can you find that is the color red?
Make it a Race
Place the pajama tops on one side of the room and the bottoms on the other side of the room. Have your child run from one side to the other matching the pajamas. Bring the tops to the bottoms or vice versa.
