Time for Bed by Mem Fox

Time for Bed is delightful book perfect for reading before bed. The repetitive text lulls you to sleep while the paintings are calming and sweet. I was drawn to the stars in the pictures, so I created the star counting activity for my kids.

What You’ll Need:

  • Black cardstock
  • Silver marker
  • Star stickers

Easy setup for the star counting math activity for preschool

There is a lot of flexibility in what math skills you can work on with this activity. For my daughter (age 2.5), I wrote the numbers 1-10 on the black paper twice. For my son (almost 7), I wrote the numbers 1-20.

Simply call out a number. Have your child find the number and then cover it with a star sticker.

Continue calling out numbers until all of the numbers have stickers. The star stickers were easily removed from the cardstock we used. It allowed us to repeat the activity using the same paper.

For my son, I gave him addition problems in order to cover up the stars. 10+8=what? Cover the 18 with a star.

More Variations

  • Roll dice instead of calling out numbers.
  • Write larger numbers and count by 5s or 10s.
  • Write numbers on the stars and play a matching game.
  • Practice colors by calling out a color and having your child place that sticker on the paper.
  • Draw constellations by connecting the stars together in numerical order.
