Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle

Little Blue Truck is always a kid favorite. Blue is beeping along saying hi to all of the farm animals he passes when a dump truck goes roaring by. The dump truck gets stuck in the mud, but no one wants to help a big mean truck. Little Blue tries to help, but he gets stuck too. He calls for help, and all of the animals come to his rescue. The dump truck learns a valuable lesson in kindness. If you love Little Blue Truck, you’ll enjoy the rest of the books in the series as well. Look for Little Blue Truck Leads the Way, Little Blue Truck’s Christmas (with twinkle lights), and the latest Little Blue Truck’s Halloween (a lift-the-flap board book).

Farm Animal Races

All three of my kids (ages 6, 2, and 6 months) enjoyed this activity. We built a simple ramp and raced farm animals in a truck.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Build a ramp with materials you have around the house. For this ramp, we used plastic storage bins and a piece of cardboard. Place the truck with a farm animal (or two or three) at the top of the ramp. Let the truck full of animals roll down the ramp.

What happens if only one animal is in the truck?

What happens when you add more animals to the truck?

Does the truck go down the ramp faster or slower? Time the races to find out.

Lily wanted to see if the animals would roll down the ramp, too. She gave them a push and watched them slide down.

What will roll or slide down the ramp? Try this investigation with farm animals and Little Blue Truck to find out.

If you make the ramp short enough even babies can play, too. Use materials that are safe for mouthing (skip the cardboard and any small animals). Let your baby push the truck and play with the animals.
