Super Hero Math Game: Catch a Villain

Our first Super Hero games have been all about the pretend play. Pretend play is important and has many benefits all on its own. With as much as Aiden loves Super Heroes these days, I knew I could add in a little learning and he would still have fun.

The Back Story or Plot to the Game

The villains have robbed a bank and stolen lots of gold coins. Your job as the Super Hero is to catch the villains and bring back the coins.

The Setup

Aiden requested I make pipecleaner people for the villains {just like we did for our parachutes}. We also punched out 50 or 60 gold circles with a small circle punch. I wrote the numbers 1-5 on the gold coins. Most of the coins have the number 1 or 2 {so we could practice adding small numbers}. You will also need one die or number cards.

How to Play the Super Hero Math Game

  1. Place the pipecleaner villains and gold coins on one side of the room.
  2. Have your Super Hero child start on the other side of the room. Roll the die. {You could also choose a number card or just call out a number.} The number on the die tells you how many gold coins you recover from the villain.
  3. The Super Hero runs across the room and catches one of the villains. Gather gold coins from the pile {based on the number rolled}. Run back to the start.
  4. Help the Super Hero add up the numbers on the gold coins.

Variations:

  • Work on just number recognition. Write numbers that your child needs to work on.
  • Work on just counting. Make each gold coin worth only 1. Grab a handful of coins each time a villain is caught. Count the gold coins collected.
  • Work on letters or letter sounds just like in our Letter Sounds Race. Write letters on the gold coins instead of using magnets.
