Color Changing Heart Bookmarks

Steve Spangler Science sent us the heat sensitive paper we used in this project. You can purchase a package of the heat sensitive paper here.

The color of the paper is magenta when it’s at room temperature or cooler. Warm up the paper (with the heat of your hand) and the color washes away. The paper turns white. The magenta color returns as soon as the paper cools back down.

Supplies Needed

In addition to the heat sensitive paper, you’ll need the following supplies to make your color changing heart bookmarks:

  • Cardstock (we chose yellow)
  • Heart punch
  • Hole punch
  • Paper cutter and/or scissors
  • Glue
  • Yarn
  • Stamp and stamp pad (we used this Rain Forest set from Melissa and Doug)

Aiden wanted yellow bookmarks so we could add a lizard stamp. The lizard is two colors to represent a color changing chameleon. I used a paper cutter to cut yellow cardstock into the size we wanted. We got 8 bookmarks per page.

We used a heart punch to cut out hearts from the heat sensitive paper and attached them to the yellow cardstock with a glue stick. We used a hole punch and yarn to tie on a bit of fringe.

Touch the heart and warm it up to see the color change.

Pass the color changing heart bookmarks out for valentines at school. You can write the To/From on the back of the bookmark. I plan on adding a circle tag (made with a circle punch) to the fringe on the bookmark. Then, Aiden can write the To/From on the circle.
