Recycled Christmas Ornaments that Sparkle
While experimenting with Mod Podge, I wanted to make a bauble from recycled cardboard. I eventually ended up with two different Christmas ornaments that sparkle.
Christmas Ornaments Made from Cardboard
A Recycled Bauble
Here’s what you need to make your own:
- thin cardboard – I used a cereal box
- pretty paper – cut into small squares
- glue
- masking tape
- scissors
- Mod Podge Sparkle (has glitter in it)
- sponge brush
How to make one:
Cut cardboard into strips.
Glue strips into rings.
Place 3 rings together to form the structure for the bauble.
Use tape to form the rest of the structure of the bauble.
Apply Mod Podge to section of the tape and add your paper squares a few at a time. {I used newspaper at first because I was going to paint it. This would have required several layers, so I just used pretty scrapbook paper to cover the newspaper instead.)
Cover your paper in another coat of Mod Podge. Think papier–mâché – I dipped my sponge brush in some Mod Podge, applied it to the tape, added Mod Podge to the back of a paper square, placed the paper square on the tape, applied more Mod Podge to the top of the paper square. This adheres the paper square to the tape and gives it a nice shiny coating. Continue adding the paper squares and Mod Podge until the tape is completely covered.
After the Mod Podge dries, it looks like this. Mod Podge on a strip of paper to use for hanging.
And like this on the tree.
A Recycled Ring that Sparkles
After making the cardboard rings, I saw an empty roll of masking tape… Enter the Mod Podge and paper squares.
I cut strips of paper this time instead of squares. I coated the ring and paper strips with Mod Podge. Wrap the paper around and round covering with Mod Podge as you go and you have a sparkly ring. Super easy.
I’m thinking about putting something inside the ring, but I haven’t quite decided what. Do you have any ideas for what I could do?
