Pumpkin Rescue and Counting Game
Practice scissor skills and counting with a fun pumpkin themed counting game for preschool.
Pumpkin Rescue and Counting Game
Supplies Needed for the Pumpkin Counting Game
- ice cube tray or muffin tin
- pumpkins (pom poms with pipe cleaner stems), pom poms, or something similar
- masking tape or painter’s tape
- scissors
- blocks (optional)
Set up:
Place the pumpkins in the ice cube tray and cover with strips of tape.
You could use different color pom poms to represent apples or whatever you like. Instead of pom poms, you could use colored gems, erasers, or even small toys.
Set out blocks nearby – one for each pumpkin.
How to Play
The goal is to practice scissor skills by cutting the tape and rescuing the pumpkins. I first saw Days with Grey set up a similar cutting practice activity in a muffin tin and counting bears.
For extra fine motor practice, have your child place the pumpkins on top of the blocks.
My 4 year old kept knocking the pumpkins off and restacking them. Some kids might find it frustrating to accidentally knock them off. They may need encouragement when it happens.
Have your child count the pumpkins every once in a while as they play.
Once you finish one round, you can reset the pumpkins and replace the tape to play the counting game all over again.
