Pumpkin Building STEM Challenge
What can you build for your pumpkins? I set up this pumpkin building STEM challenge for my kindergarteners. Preschoolers and elementary kids will enjoy this one.
Pumpkin Building STEM Challenge
Supplies Needed for the Pumpkin Building Challenge
- Wooden blocks, KEVA planks, LEGO bricks, or other building materials
- orange pom poms
- green pipe cleaners
- hot glue
Make the Pom Pom Pumpkins
Cut the green pipe cleaners and attach them to the pom poms. I like to use hot glue for this purpose. You may prefer another adhesive.
STEM Challenge Set Up
Place the blocks, or building materials, in a bin. Place the pumpkins in another container. I find this helps organize the materials. My kindergartners will put it back how they found it when they clean up.
The Pumpkins Building Challenge
What can you build for the pumpkins? Can you build a bridge or a tower? Can you build a pumpkin patch?
My students set to work creating a variety of builds. Some students built pumpkin patches.
Some built bridges or towers. Others just had fun creating with the materials.
I brought the pom pom pumpkins home and Lily (age 7.5) and Elon (age 5.5) wanted to make pumpkin patches, too.
They asked to add leaves to their builds. Lily stated that they also needed people, so they went through the LEGO DUPLO bricks to look for people to visit their pumpkin patches.
This STEM challenge can be a short 5 minutes like my kindergarteners had. (It was a part of 5 station rotation.) Or you can allow kids to extend the activity by attending elements of pretend play to it like my own kids did.
