How I Stay Active with 3 Kids

As a mom of 3 kids, finding time to do anything alone is difficult. And honestly, I’m okay with that. Especially when it comes to exercise. I am not a runner and I don’t enjoy working out by myself. Having a solution that includes the kids means I get to stay active and we get to spend time together as a family. Choose one of my three options below and head out with your kids soon.

Stay Active Option 1: Walk before we play.

My kids love to go to playgrounds. (As they should.) They get to run around and play with other kids. They come home worn out and ready for bed. The downside of a playground visit is that I don’t get to move around much. I don’t sit on a bench because I do have to chase the toddler around, but that’s really not enough for me.

My solution: walk around the park before we go to the playground.

We frequent one of three nearby playgrounds. They all have walking/hiking trails nearby. We park near the playground (but usually not right beside it) and make a loop around the park before we get to the playground. This means I get to walk around before standing at the playground. This simple solution adds in a little bit of movement to my day.

My two year old is now fast enough to walk on his own, but I would wear him in my baby carrier or push him in the stroller when he was younger.

Reebok Trilux: Shoes for staying active

A good pair of shoes is essential to being active. I’ve been looking for a new pair and the Reebok Trilux caught my eye. I love the color pattern. It gives the shoe such personality. They are comfortable, too!

I need a shoe for every day that’s functional yet stylish. I want to be able to walk anywhere yet still enjoy the way the shoes look. The Reebok Trilux accomplishes this for me. They would make a great Mother’s Day gift. Treat yourself or drop some hints.

You can find the Reebok Trilux at Academy Sports. They have a cool feature on their website where you can find your true fit size based on your current favorite pair of shoes.

Stay Active Option 2: Walk/jog while the kids ride their bikes.

We have this amazing little paved trail that runs along the river. It’s mostly shaded, fairly flat, and doesn’t have a lot of curves. This makes it perfect for bike riding – especially for kids.

They ride their bikes while my husband and I walk/jog. Our speed depends on their speed. Aiden (age 8) is pretty fast. He usually rides up ahead, turns around and then rides back to us. This allows him to ride faster while staying in sight.

Lily (age 4) is a work in progress when it comes to bicycling. She has improved dramatically since last year. She can steer and pedal at the same time. She’s working on pedaling faster, so sometimes we get up to a brisk walk.

Go for a jog while your kid rides her bike.

Elon (age 2) loves his stroller trike. The pedals can be adjusted so they don’t move with the wheel. He can pedal if he wants but it won’t do anything. When he’s ready, we can adjust the trike so he can pedal on his own.

We like to walk/ride in the evenings when it’s cooler. Then, we get to enjoy the sunset together.

The view looking over the river is lovely.

Stay Active Option 3: Go for a hike with the family.

Another popular option for our family is going for a hike. Getting out into nature and exploring the trails is one of our favorite ways to spend time together. My Instagram feed (and stories) are filled with our hiking adventures.

Elon is getting better at hiking for longer distances. He can even do hills now. (We practiced a lot on flat trails near the creek.) I still carry my baby carrier as he eventually wears out and needs to be carried before we finish the hike. Carrying a 30 pound toddler while hiking is definitely a good workout.
