Heart Shaped Cheese Crackers
With hearts and Valentine’s Day all over the place, I thought I would make some fun heart shaped cheese crackers. I ended up using the recipe found here with a few modifications. There are a lot of recipes for goldfish crackers out there, but I chose hers because she used whole wheat flour.
Homemade Cheese Cracker Recipe
Ingredients:
2 cups coarsely grated white cheddar
4 tablespoons margarine
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees (I preheated my convection oven to 340.)
Place all of the ingredients in the food processor. According to Smitten Kitchen’s recipe, you are supposed to run the food processor until it forms a ball (about 2 minutes). This never happened for me. I’m guessing it’s because I used margarine instead of butter?? It formed little clumps instead. I took the dough out and pressed it together by hand.
Refrigerate dough for at least 30 minutes (I left mine while I went shopping. It was a little hard when I pulled it out, but it rolled out fine after a few seconds.)
Lightly flour your surface and your rolling pin.
Roll the dough out to 1/8 inch thick.
Use heart shaped cookie cutters to cut out your Valentine shapes.
Transfer crackers to an ungreased cookie sheet with a 1/2 inch between them.
Bake the crackers on the middle rack for 12 to 15 minutes, or until they are barely browned at the edges. (I used my convection oven set at 340 for 13 minutes.)
Remove from the oven and set the cookie sheet on a rack to cool.
I couldn’t wait to let them cool before I tried them. They were really good warm. They taste like white cheddar cheese-its to me, which pleases me.
Finished product.
I dyed a tiny bit of dough red {with regular red food coloring} just to see how they would turn out. Not sure I’m fond of this look, but If you like more festive crackers, try this!
Happy Valentine’s Day fun!
