Harry Potter Inspired Chocolate Frogs
A St. Louis bakery (La Pâtisserie Chouquette) has special Harry Potter themed desserts and treats during the month of October. Aiden was inspired by some of their creations for his own Harry Potter birthday party. He specifically requested chocolate covered pretzel wands and chocolate frogs for his party.
Supplies and Ingredients Needed to Make Chocolate Frogs
- Chocolate Melting Pot (can also use a double boiler or microwave)
- Frog mold
- Melting chocolate
- spoon
How to Make Chocolate Frogs
Making chocolate frogs is as easy as melting some chocolate and pouring it into a mold.
I like to use Wilton candy melts dark cocoa mint. The Wilton dark cocoa candy melts or Ghirardelli dark chocolate melting wafers are also good choices. Just be sure you choose a melting chocolate that you enjoy eating.
Using a chocolate melting pot makes melting the chocolate super easy. Simply add the chocolate to the pot and turn it on. My melting pot has two settings (melt and warm). Turn it to the melt setting and wait for the chocolate to melt. Stir occasionally. Once the chocolate is completely melted, turn the melting pot to the warm setting to keep the chocolate melted while you fill the molds.
Alternatively, you can melt the chocolate using a double boil or microwave. Just follow the package directions.
Once your chocolate is melted, use a spoon to add the chocolate to your frog mold. One bag of candy melts made 12 chocolate frogs for me.
Slightly pick up the the frog mold and tap it on the counter to smooth out the chocolate.
The frog mold I use only has 8 frogs so you’ll need to do two batches. Turn off the melting pot and allow the remaining chocolate to cool. Cover the pot with a plate or piece of foil to keep anything from falling into the chocolate.
Place the filled frog molds into the refrigerator to chill.
Once the chocolate frogs are cooled and set, turn the mold over onto a clean surface. The chocolate frogs should easily fall out. If they are stuck, wiggle the mold a little (like you would an ice cube tray).
Store the chocolate frogs in a cool place.
Add Collectible Wizard Cards
In Harry Potter, the chocolate frogs come with collectible wizard trading cards. You can make your own using a chocolate frog card template from Little Falling Star. I downloaded all of the images for the cards and added them to a Word document.
You’ll find links for Albus Dumbledore, Helga Hufflepuff, Godric Gryffindor, Rowina Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin as well as a card template with a blank image. Add your own child’s photo here.
Print the chocolate frog cards onto card stock. 3 wizard cards fit on page for me.
Cut the cards out. Glue the front and back together. I used a glue stick (I like the disappearing purple glue sticks so you can actually see where you put the glue.)
In Harry Potter, the chocolate frogs come in little boxes. I didn’t feel like folding paper boxes, so I simply placed a chocolate frog in a snack size plastic baggie and added a wizard card.
I’ll be sharing more of my son’s Harry Potter themed birthday party soon.
