Flower Creative Challenge

Are you ready for a new challenge from Tinkerlab?  This time it’s all about flowers.  The purpose of the challenges are to allow children to explore materials and be creative.

Aiden and his friend, Lindsey, took part in this challenge.  Our child-directed activity began with a decision on where to obtain the flowers.  Do we look in the backyard or the front yard?  They wanted to go for a walk around the neighborhood.  So off we went.  We walked to the neighborhood lake and saw a beautiful patch of yellow flowers.  They decided to gather them up.

While we walked, we talked about what we might do with the flowers.  We thought about playing in mud and adding our flowers to our mud creations.  We talked about gluing the flowers to paper.  Aiden had also been gathering rocks.  He said he wanted to paint the rocks.  {Are you surprised? That boy is always collecting rocks, and he loves to paint them.}  Lindsey had the idea to make flower prints using paint.  We decided we wanted to try all three ideas.  First, we had to paint.  Second, we would glue flowers.  Then, we would play in the mud.  {We never got to the mud.  We had too much fun with the other ides.  Mud will have to wait until another day.}

Painting with Flowers and Making Prints

The first thing Aiden and Lindsey had to do was paint their rocks.  Lindsey chose to use a paint brush.  Aiden chose to paint with a flower.

 

 

It’s time to try making prints with the flowers.  Dunk the flower in paint and touch it to the paper.  This experiment was short lived.  They both enjoyed moving the flowers across the paper like a brush stroke much more than the printing technique.

 

Painting with flowers was very entertaining and continued for quite some time.

 

Flower Collages

We moved inside to make some flower collages.  This activity was great for practicing using a glue stick.  In fact, that’s all Aiden really wanted to do.  He essentially painted the paper with the glue stick.  He eventually added the flowers.

Lindsey had a little mishap with her glue stick, but she made it work for her.
