Exploring Magnetism at Christmas
We continue our countdown to Christmas for day 12 of Advent. I’m sharing a Christmas science idea with you at the beginning of each day until Christmas. Day 12’s activity is all about Exploring Magnetism at Christmas.
Exploring Magnetism at Christmas
In our last box of goodies given to us by CraftProjectIdeas.com were glittery stars and magnets {among other things}. We’ve used the stars for some Christmas Star Math and Christmas Star Classification. Aiden really enjoyed exploring with the magnets. His first “activity” idea for the stars was to create magnets. I then had him use the magnets in the math and science activities. This time I wanted to focus on exploring magnetism.
I chose some Christmas colored craft supplies – sparkly pom poms and pipe cleaners, red, white, and green beads, jingle bells, a few of the glittery stars {some with magnets, some without}, an ornament, and a candy cane left over from our candy cane experiment.
I placed the items in a Christmas tin.
I had Aiden take out the items one at a time and test to see if they were magnetic. He used one of the magnets attached to a star for the testing.
Aiden sorted the objects into two piles – magnetic and not magnetic. We talked about what the magnetic objects had in common – they all had metal on them.
I’ll see you tomorrow for Day 13’s Christmas science activity.
