Duck in the Truck {Jez Alborough Virtual Book Club for Kids}
Jez Alborough is July’s featured author for the Virtual Book Club for Kids. He has a few different series plus several stand alone books. (You can read more about them through my Amazon affiliate links that follow). Aiden liked Six Little Chicks a lot. We read it every day for a couple weeks. He also really enjoyed the Duck in the Truck series.
Duck in the Truck by Jez Alborough
Aiden chose Duck in the Truck as our book to feature this month. Duck gets his truck stuck in the muck. Frog, sheep, and goat come along to help him get unstuck. Eventually, they succeed in getting duck and the truck out of the muck. Duck drives off and leaves his friends in the muck.
As you might expect, this book is full of rhymes – duck, truck, muck, stuck; sheep, jeep; goat, boat; etc. As you read, it’s a great idea to point out the rhyming words and talk about other words that rhyme with them.
We did not like the ending of Duck in the Truck. Aiden and I talked about how Duck’s friends did a nice and helpful thing by pulling him out of the muck, but it was not nice at all for Duck to just drive away. He should have helped them out of the muck and thanked them for what they did.
There are several other books in the Duck in the Truck series: Fix-It Duck, Super Duck, Hit the Ball Duck, Duck’s Key: Where Can It Be?, Duck to the Rescue, and more!
Have you read any of them? Which is your favorite?
Duck in the Truck Storytelling and Pretend Play
I set up a play scene for Aiden to retell Duck in the Truck. I set out a duck, a truck {tractor really}, a sheep, a jeep, a frog, a goat, and a boat. I let Aiden pour some dirt on the ground {outside} and spray water on it. I thought about using our Toyrarium for the scene, but I didn’t want it to get too muddy for the live plants. Aiden had fun storytelling – retelling Duck in the Truck and creating his own stories.
Here’s a video of Aiden’s stories.
