Cornstarch and Jello Play Dough
We were working on a project with jello and didn’t use it all. I didn’t want to waste it so I tried making it into a slime. I added cornstarch to the jello solution, and it was a sticky and slimy version of oobleck. I added more cornstarch and more jello solution, but it was a bit crumbly – not what I wanted. I put it in the refrigerator hoping the cold might do something for the dough. The next day, we took out the dough. The texture was quite interesting. It was squishy and cold but still did not stay together very well. I remembered our cornstarch and glue play dough and tried a different method. It was successful and made a lovely nice smelling dough. Here’s how you can make it, too!
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup flavored jello
- 2 tablespoons hot water
- 1/4 cup white school glue
- 1 cup cornstarch
Instructions:
- Dissolve 1/4 cup flavored jello in 2 tablespoons of hot water.
- Mix in 1/4 cup of white school glue.
- Add cornstarch 1/4 cup at a time. {You might not need the entire 1 cup.} Stir the cornstarch into the mixture until it becomes a sticky dough.
- Then, you will knead the cornstarch into the dough until it is the consistency you like – it will eventually become less sticky and more like a play dough. If your play dough gets too dry, add a little more water. If it’s too sticky, add a little more cornstarch. {It’s very forgiving.}
*Jello could stain, so be sure to cover you work area and wear play clothes.
Pretend Play Ideas
Aiden used cookie cutters and Play-doh food molds to create pretend food. He also cut the dough up with a butter knife. He tore apart the play dough into small pieces. The dough received his seal of approval for inspiring fun!
Next up he made a volcano with the dough pieces.
{He’s been very much into volcanoes lately. He inspired this collection of 10 ways to make a volcano.}
Then, he added some animals to the party and continued his fun.
