Community Helpers Number Game
This week’s focus is on community helpers for the Virtual Book Club for Kids. The featured book is Trashy Town by Andrea Zimmerman. We learned about community helpers while practicing preschool math skills with our community helpers number game. Be sure to check out all of the community helper themed activities at the end. Community Helpers Number Game
This preschool math game does a great job practicing number recognition, counting, and one-to-one correspondence.
Supplies Needed:
- Melissa and Doug Nesting & Sorting Buildings & Vehicles or something similar
- Post-It Notes
- Various objects to count (optional)
Our community helpers number game was inspired by the Melissa and Doug Nesting & Sorting Buildings & Vehicles. If you don’t have this set, you could use any combination of community helper vehicles. You can use cardboard boxes for the buildings or just print out pictures to hang up or place on the floor.
Preschool Math Game 1: Number Pick Up
Write numbers 1-6 on your Post-It Notes. (I created 3 sets of numbers.) Place the Post-It Notes around the room or spread them out in your play area. Start with the vehicles in their buildings. Have your child match the numbers to find which vehicle goes where.
Have your child choose a community helper vehicle. Drive around the neighborhood to find the corresponding number to the vehicle.
Have your child pick up the Post-It and place it on the vehicle. Drive the number back to the building.
Choose a new vehicle and head out again. Talk to your child about the community helper they chose. What does a school bus driver do? What number is on the school bus? Can you find the number 2? Where should the school bus go?
Preschool Math Game 2: One-to-One Correspondence
Start with the vehicles in their buildings. Spread out the Post-It Notes. This time you can leave the Post-It Notes blank or draw a picture or shape on each note.
Have your child choose a community helper vehicle. What number is on the vehicle? Drive around the neighborhood to pick up that many Post-It Notes. Drive the Post-It Notes back to the building. Deliver the Post-It Notes to the building. Count how many Post-Its you are delivering.
Instead of Post-It Notes, you could pick up various objects or toys. The recycling truck could pick up paper. The school bus could pick up kids. The fire truck could rescue animals.
What other games could you play?
This preschool math game is similar to our House Number Sorting Activity. It combines pretend play with number recognition, counting, and one-to-one correspondence.
