Christmas Science Advent Calendar: Christmas Star Classification
Are you ready to start counting down the days until Christmas? Today is the first day of Advent. It’s time to prepare for Christmas – the birth of Jesus. In addition to our normal Advent activities, we are doing Christmas science activities each day. I will be sharing each Christmas science idea with you at the beginning of each day. I’ll also create a landing page for you to find all of the Christmas Science Advent calendar activities in one place. Day 1’s activity is Christmas Star Classification and Sorting.
Christmas Science Advent Calendar
We placed our Advent calendar on a mini Christmas tree this year. Inside the numbered envelope ornaments are names of the science activities or items that go to the science activity.
Inside day one’s envelope are these sparkly Christmas stars.
Christmas Star Classification
Aiden loved the Christmas star math games, so I set up a classification activity using the sparkly stars CraftProjectIdeas.com sent us along with other craft supplies. The glittery stars came in 3 colors {gold, silver, and white} and 3 sizes.
Recall the importance of classification from our A to Z Science series for toddlers and preschoolers. Grouping things into similar categories makes it easier to study, easier to see patterns, and easier to find things again later.
I placed all of the glittery stars on a tray for Aiden to sort. I asked him what differences he saw in the stars. He mentioned color and size. I asked him how he wanted to sort the stars first – by color or by size. He chose size.
He picked out the 3 sizes of stars. I placed them at the top of the tray for him.
Then, I had him place all of the small stars below the small star, all of the medium size stars below the medium size star, and all of the large stars below the large star.
Next he sorted the stars by color.
I’ll see you tomorrow for Day 2’s Christmas science activity.
