Combining baking soda and vinegar is a classic science activity. Using colored vinegar and cookie cutters is not a new idea, but I knew it would be something Aiden would enjoy especially with a Christmas theme.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • baking soda
  • vinegar
  • food coloring
  • a large pan/dish to contain the play
  • containers for the colored vinegar
  • a dropper/pippette {or even just spoons}
  • Christmas themed cookie cutters

The setup is simple:

  1. Place cookie cutters in your large pan/dish.
  2. Fill the cookie cutters with baking soda.
  3. Pour vinegar in containers and add food coloring. {We used red and green for Christmas colors.}
  4. Place the colored vinegar containers alongside a dropper or spoon.

Invite your child to play. Add drops of vinegar to the baking soda filled cookie cutters. Observe the bubbles. Explore color mixing.

After Aiden was finished playing with the first setup, he asked for more cookie cutters {I had them sitting next to the pan as an added prompt.} I gave him a big bowl to place the used cookie cutters in. Then, he added new cookie cutters to the pan. He filled the cookie cutters with baking soda and continued playing.

Instead of placing the food coloring in the vinegar, you could place drops of food coloring under the baking soda. When your kids add drops of vinegar to the baking soda, they will get a color surprise.

What is your favorite way to play with baking soda and vinegar?
