Christmas Ribbon Measuring
We continue our countdown to Christmas for Day 5 of Advent.. I’m sharing a Christmas science idea with you at the beginning of each day until Christmas. Day 5’s activity is Christmas Ribbon Measuring.
Christmas Ribbon Measuring
Measuring is an important science skill. Knowing the proper way to use measuring tools is essential. Providing interesting objects to measure always makes practicing the skill more fun.
Aiden loves to carry around his ruler and measure things. I’ve shown him how to line up the object with the zero mark on the the ruler {it’s sometimes but not always the end of the ruler}. We repeat this lesson every once in a while just to be sure he remembers.
In this activity, I first let Aiden practice his scissor skills. He cut pieces of ribbon of various lengths.
Next I had Aiden sort the but ribbon pieces by size.
The ribbon pieces look like a graph when placed side by side. I showed this to Aiden. He thought it looked cool.
He then picked some ribbon pieces to measure. If we wanted, we could add numbers to our graph showing the length of the ribbon pieces.
How will your child play with the Christmas ribbon? Practice measuring and graphing. Then, have fun sorting the ribbon by size, color, and texture.
I’ll see you tomorrow for Day 6’s Christmas science activity.
