Christmas Map Reading and Crafting
Our countdown to Christmas continues for day 9 of Advent. I’m sharing a Christmas science idea with you at the beginning of each day until Christmas. Day 9’s activity is Christmas Map Reading. Practice map reading skills in order to gather supplies to create a Christmas craft.
Christmas Map Reading
Aiden requested a map that leads to Christmas hidden treasures similar to our Easter Egg Hunt Map. Instead of hiding eggs, I hid craft supplies. Once all of the craft supplies were found, we could create Christmas ornaments {Aiden’s requested Christmas craft}.
I created a simple map of part of our house. Inside the rooms, I labeled a few pieces of furniture or landmarks. It’s by no means a detailed map and it’s not drawn to scale. It does show the relative positions of some of the objects in the room. I placed stars on the map to represent where the craft supplies could be found. The craft supplies were in containers or plastic baggies. {To add even more of a Christmas touch, you could put the supplies in Christmas bags or Christmas wrapped boxes. Then, you’d search for presents.}
I showed Aiden how to use the map. Then, he would set off to find each item. He kept the map at the dining room table {where we planned on doing our Christmas craft} and ran to each location on the map.
Here are the gathered supplies {some of which were sent to us by CraftProjectIdeas.com}:
Aiden first chose a black plastic lid and some red glitter glue. I drew a snowflake on a clear plastic lid with gold glitter glue.
Next, he wanted to make glitter snowflakes with craft sticks.
He also experimented with a few other items but decided they weren’t ornament worthy.
I’ll see you tomorrow for Day 10’s Christmas science activity.
