Chocolate Oobleck Mud Dough
Are you looking for an edible play dough or a fun new sensory experience? Our chocolate oobleck mud dough is a combination dough that behaves a little like oobleck and little like play dough. It has the consistency of mud and is just as squishy. Made with edible ingredients, this oobleck dough is taste safe. This makes it perfect for toddlers or little ones who like to eat everything. Chocolate Oobleck Mud Dough
I wanted to create some sort of mud for the kids to play in, but I didn’t really want to use dirt. My toddler tries to eat everything. Chocolate is a great natural colorant, so a chocolate dough sounded like a good idea. Oobleck and mud are both non-Newtonian fluids. They behave like a liquid unless stress is being applied. Then, they behave like a solid.
Lily (age 4) and Elon (age 2) helped create the mud dough. They dumped in cornstarch and instant pudding mix. (They also ended up covering themselves in cornstarch when they poured the box. Cornstarch tends to go flying so be warned. Play clothes would work well here. This is a good activity to do outside unless it’s too windy.) I added in some cocoa powder. Then, they stirred.
Next we added in some water and stirred again. The dough was really sticky at this point, so I added in more corn starch. I kneaded the dough for a while to incorporate the cornstarch and allow the pudding mix to work its magic. The instant pudding has thickeners in it to help form the dough.
Along with the chocolate oobleck mud dough, I set out some bowls, plates, and tea cups from our Green Toys Cookware and Dining Set.
Lily and Elon went to work making mud pies, squishing and serving the dough.
It was a beautiful day so the kids continued to play with the mud dough for over an hour. We had to go inside for lunch otherwise they would have played longer.
Chocolate Oobleck Mud Dough Recipe
Ingredients
- 3.5-4 cups cornstarch
- one package instant pudding mix (we used this instant pudding, but any kind should work)
- about a 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- water
Directions
Use the ingredient amounts as a guide. Adjust the amounts as need to produce the desired color and texture. Mix together the cornstarch, pudding mix, and cocoa powder. Add water about a 1/2 cup at a time. Stir to combine. Then, mix the dough with your hands. Add more cornstarch to make the dough less sticky. Knead the dough until it feels right. It should be soft and squishy like mud. If you want it more like oobleck, add less cornstarch. If you want it more like play dough, add more cornstarch.
