Build a Beetle Game
Denise Fleming is April’s featured author for the Virtual Book Club for Kids. We were inspired by the book, Beetle Bop, to make a Build a Beetle Drawing Game. This game works on number recognition and following directions while exploring beetles. Affiliate links are included in this post.
Beetle Bop by Denise Fleming
Beetle Bop is all about different types of beetles – striped beetles, spotted beetles, diving beetles, crawling beetles, flying beetles, flashing beetles… Denise Fleming does a great job of showcasing different beetles throughout the book in her signature paper pulp style.
Build a Beetle Game
In this game, kids will draw beetle parts based on the numbers rolled on a die. For younger kids, you can pre-make the beetle parts. Then, they can just assemble the beetles based on the numbers rolled on the die. I created a printable with the beetle drawing game as well as the pre-made beetle parts. Feel free to use my beetle parts or cut out your own. Click to download the Build a Beetle Game Printable
Here’s a sample of what the pre-made beetle parts look like. Click on the picture to download the printable.
Aiden wanted to start with the pre-made beetle parts to build his beetle.
This was great for number recognition on the die and finding the corresponding numbers on the beetle parts.
Then, we moved on to drawing our own beetles. We took turns rolling the die. I read the directions and we drew our beetles.
Aiden then wanted to draw his own beetles without using the game {completely fine with me}. Practicing drawing skills and pencil grip is another great benefit of the beetle drawing game!
