Beginning Letter Sounds Flower Matching Game
Last year, we made a simple spring flower box craft. I saved the flowers and we’ve been using them in various learning games. This time I added letters to the flowers. The goal is to work on beginning letter sounds. I gathered up a bunch of toys – mostly Little People animals or DUPLO animals. You can use whatever you have on hand that starts with a variety of letters.
There are several ways to play. Select a flower. Have you child say the letter on the flower. Then, have her say the sound the letter makes. Ask: What toy starts with the letter ___? Find the toy and say the name of the toy. For example, C is for car.
You could also look for all of the toys that start with your letter flower. Find all of the toys that start with A. What sounds does the letter A make?
Instead of laying the flowers on the table, “plant” them in a box. Find all of the toys that start with the letter D. What sound does the letter D make?
Using a clothespin to attach the flower to the box might be easier plus it adds in some fine motor skill work.
If you don’t have a box, you could just plant the flower in the clothespin.
3 More Ways to Use the Flowers
You can also use the flowers and toys to practice spelling words. Select a toy. Say the name of the toy. How do you spell it?
Use the flowers in a sight word writing activity.
Play a flower number line game with a LEGO bee.
