Barnyard Math Games {Giles Andreae Virtual Book Club for Kids}
Giles Andreae is this month’s featured author for the Virtual Book Club for Kids. We had fun reading many of his books. Today we’re sharing some barnyard math games to go along with Cock-a-Doodle-Doo! Barnyard Hullabaloo. Affiliate links are included in this post.
Cock-a-Doodle-Doo! Barnyard Hullabaloo by Giles Andreae
In Cock-a-Doodle-Doo! Barnyard Hullabaloo, you’ll visit all of the noisy animals on the farm. Giles Andreae has a sing-sing poem for each of them. Have fun meeting the animals and repeating their sounds!
Barnyard Math Games
Supplies:
- Milk caps
- Container to hold the milk caps
- Marker {for writing numbers}
- White board {optional}
- Washable crayons or dry erase crayons
- Farm animals {we used the Safari Ltd Farm TOOB and the Safari Ltd Farm Babies TOOB as well as animals from the Little People Fun Sounds Farm.}
Math Game 1
I set up this math game in a similar way to our Truffula Tree Math game {where we used milk caps and truffula trees}.
Write numbers on the milk caps. I wrote numbers 1-10 twice. I also threw in some numbers 11-20. On one milk cap, write a plus sign. On the back of that milk cap, write a minus sign. {You can also find two lids that fit into each other and write on the top of each lid.} Write an equals sign on one milk cap.
Place all of the milk caps in a container. {We used a peanut butter jar.} Shake the container.
Draw one milk cap from the container. What number is it?
Choose animals to represent that number and count them out. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10. 10 animals.
Flip the cap with the plus sign and minus sign to determine your next action. If the + is on top, add animals. If the – is on top, you’ll subtract.
Draw another milk cap from the container. What number is it?
If you’re adding, choose animals to represent the second number. Place the equals sign down. Find the milk cap that finishes your number sentence. 2+3= {find the number 5}. And choose animals to represent that number.
If you are subtracting, take away the correct number of animals. How many do you have left?
Math Game 2
Aiden placed all of the animals in the barn. He sorted them into their stalls. That’s a bonus classification activity!
For the second game, I wrote numbers and animal names on the white board. Aiden had to place the correct number of those animals on the board. We worked on a bit of word recognition while counting the animals. What animal starts with the letter p?
At the end, Aiden counted the animals and I wrote their number and name on the board.
