Baby Animal Matching Game
We have lots of TOOBS from Safari Ltd. Some of them were sent to us by them and others I’ve purchased. (I usually buy them with a coupon from Michaels.) I love using the animals in different learning games and play activities.
For this game you’ll need:
- 10 plastic Easter eggs
- Safari Ltd Farm TOOB
- Safari Ltd Farm Babies TOOB
Select the baby animals and their mothers from the TOOBs. We used the pig and piglet, the Holstein cow and calf, the sheep and lamb, the horse and foal, and the chicken and chicks.
Place one animal in each egg.
How to Play:
The goal of the game is to match the baby animals to their moms. Open two eggs. If the animals match, set them off to the side. If the animals do not match, put them back in their eggs. Continue selecting eggs looking for matches.
As your child opens the eggs, talk about the name of the animal. Ask if the animal is a baby or a mother.
Can you find this mother’s baby?
Talk about the names of the baby animals. What do we call a baby cow? A calf.
What is a baby horse? A foal. (The names are on the bottom of the Safari Ltd animals, which is how I now we have Holstein cows.)
Say: This baby is called a lamb. What is its mom called? A sheep.
Variations:
Let your child open up all of the eggs. Talk about each of the animals. Match the babies with the moms after all of the eggs are open.
Put all of the moms in large eggs and all of the babies in small eggs or only use two colors – moms in one color, babies in the other.
Aiden and his friend played this game together taking turns finding matches. When they were finished playing the matching game, they continued playing with the moms and babies. Pretend play is so much fun.
