A Letter to My Teacher
Today I’m joining with a group of bloggers to say thank you to our teachers for making a difference. My letter goes out to my high school French teacher, Mrs. Berry. You can see links to the other special letters at the bottom of this post.
Dear Mrs. Berry,
Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher. I remember walking into your class and being greeted with a smile and the sound of jingling bracelets. Your happiness was contagious.
After the bell rang, you would say, “Comment allez-vous aujourd’hui?” We would respond, “Très bien, merci, et vous?” “Très bien, aussi. Quelle temps fait-il aujourd’hui?” you continued. We ended with telling you the weather “Il fait beau.” (It was beautiful or whatever the weather was like.) Most of my ability to speak French has faded but my memory of you will last a lifetime.
Throughout my teacher education courses, you were the model teacher I wrote about and strived to be like. Here is an excerpt from one of the papers I wrote in college:
She made us all feel safe because we knew we could walk into her class and be free from anything negative. This positive atmosphere protected us from anything bad that happened outside of her classroom. Her room was a completely different world.
Her gestures of civility are immeasurable. She brings her classes candy and brownies. She gives her teacher assistants and graduating seniors meaningful presents. She is curious about your life or day.
Your warmth, kindness, and generosity go above and beyond what a teacher is called to do. It’s part of what makes you special and helped your students want to learn from you.
I still have the cards I received at my high school graduation. This is the card you gave me.
It was my pleasure being your teaching assistant. Thank you for showing me how to be a teacher. I know you have made a difference in many students lives.
I found this picture of you in the yearbook. I hope you don’t mind my sharing it. It’s how I remember you (except with a bigger smile and your hands up in the air jingling your bracelet).
Thank you,
Trisha
