Peter Rabbit Map Making and Modeling Activity
This week’s Virtual Book Club for Kids is featuring Peter Rabbit. We’re sharing a Peter Rabbit map making and modeling activity. While reading the story, we drew maps and then made the story come to life in LEGO DUPLO bricks. Be sure to check out all of the bunny themed activities at the end. Peter Rabbit Map Making and Modeling Activity
Peter Rabbit is a classic story that so many children love to read. Peter Rabbit doesn’t listen to his mother and goes off to eat in Mr. McGregor’s garden. He is eventually spotted by Mr. McGreggor and ends up running all over the garden trying to escape. As I read the story, I was visualizing what the garden looked like as Peter Rabbit ran from one place to the next. I thought it would be fun for the kids to draw a map of Peter Rabbit’s home and the garden. And thus our Peter Rabbit map making and modeling activity was born. I read the story as we drew.
For younger children, drawing while reading is a good way to keep them listening and engaged in the story. Elon (my toddler) didn’t really understand what Lily (almost 4) and I were doing, but he had to draw a picture as well. Lily seemed to really like adding little details here and there to her picture. I drew a map along with her to help us create our LEGO model later. Her map and my map really look nothing alike. I love that she used her own imagination to create the parts of the story. Elon and Lily would have continued drawing maps for longer, but it was time for lunch.
After lunch, we recreated the scenes from the story in LEGO DUPLO. At this point, Aiden (age 8) joined us. He read the story on his own and helped me build the details. First he built the fir tree. I added sand to the bottom and made the blackberry patch.
Aiden and Lily planted the garden and grass around the pond.
They added the tool shed complete with knocked over flower pots and watering can. I built the wall with a locked door. Once the details were complete, we added in 5 bunnies, one cat, one mouse, and Mr. McGregor.
Then, Lily and Elon each took a bunny and hopped around the garden. Elon had to have his bunny meet the cat. (He should have listened to Peter Rabbit.)
As I reread the story, Lily took Peter Rabbit through the DUPLO map.
Then, they just had fun moving around the animals and telling their own stories. This setup makes a fun small world scene, too!
