Halloween Math Game: Pumpkin Add Ten
My son doesn’t like to do math worksheets. Who does really? But he loves math games and anything that has a theme. He approves of today’s Halloween math game that I’m calling Pumpkin Add Ten. It’s a fun way to practice adding and subtracting ten from any given number.
Halloween Math: Pumpkin Add Ten
I made a Valentine’s Add Ten game last year. I was actually surprised by how much my son liked it. I wasn’t sure how well it would go over since it’s essentially a worksheet, but I think there are two things that make these math games appealing. First, they have a fun theme: hearts for Valentine’s Day or pumpkins for Halloween. Second, I added a dice to the game. The numbers practiced are random, but the dice make the game. Without the dice, it’s just a worksheet.
I made the Halloween math game for Aiden and he still thinks it’s a fun way to practice math. It also practices writing numbers. That was another goal when I created the valentine version. I felt he needed more practice writing numbers. His writing ability has improved markedly since last winter. So have his math skills, but this was skill a good review.
You can download the Pumpkin Add Ten printable in either black and white or color for your own personal or classroom use. My son much preferred the color version. I created a special black and white version so it would print out better for those of you who can’t use color.

How to Play the Pumpkin Add Ten Halloween Math Game
The directions are on the printable. Start by rolling 2 dice. (We only have 6 sided dice. It would be great if you had 10 sided dice.) Each die represents a number (one number for the tens place and one for the ones place.) If you roll the numbers 3 and 6, then write the number 36. Be sure to explain this to your kids. Some will want to add the numbers and write 9. We want bigger numbers, so we need to treat the dice separately for this activity.
Write the numbers in the middle pumpkin. Add 10 to the middle number and write the number in the pumpkin on the right. Subtract 10 from the middle number and write the number in the pumpkin on the left.
I did an example for Aiden to show him how to play. Then, it was his turn. He rolled a 5 and a 4, so he wrote 54.
He continued rolling dice, adding, and subtracting to finish the page.
