Dinosaur Number Maze

Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs: As Retold by Mo Willems

Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs: As Retold by Mo Willems is a funny twist on the classic Goldilocks and the Three Bears story. The jacket description describes the book perfectly: “Once upon a time, there were three hungry Dinosaurs: Papa Dinosaur, Mama Dinosaur . . . and a Dinosaur who happened to be visiting from Norway. One day—for no particular reason—they decided to tidy up their house, make the beds, and prepare pudding of varying temperatures. And then—for no particular reason—they decided to go . . . someplace else. They were definitely not setting a trap for some succulent, unsupervised little girl. Definitely not!”

Dinosaur Number Maze

We took advantage of the beautiful fall day and took our activity outside. You could create your dinosaur number maze inside as well.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

• Sidewalk chalk (if outside)
• Numbers written on paper, cardboard, or paper plates (if inside or in the grass)
• Toy dinosaurs (optional)

Start by drawing a path of numbers (in numerical order) on the sidewalk. The goal is for your child to follow the numbers to get through the maze.

Add in more numbers to complete the maze. You can use random numbers to make it more difficult. Or you can use the same number or blank spaces (for example, always use the number 3) to make the path more obvious. This will help kids who are just beginning to learn their numbers.

Take your dinosaurs to the start of the maze. Practice number recognition and counting as you move the dinosaurs. Can you find the number 2? What comes after the number 5?

Help them count along to make it to the end.

Can you build a trap for dinosaurs? Since the dinosaurs set a trap for poor unsuspecting Goldilocks, we decided to set a trap for the dinosaurs.
