Readathon 2012

It is important to continue reading and learning throughout the summer.  It will help school age kids combat the “summer slide” and help them be more likely to stay on track when school starts up again in the fall.  For younger kids, it’s just as important to keep reading to them throughout the summer months even with vacations and schedule changes threatening to get in the way.

MeMeTales, PBS Kids, and several publishers are joining forces for Readathon 2012.  From June 18th to July 28th, kids will have access to certain books for free from the MeMeTales website and app.  Then, a group of awesome bloggers will be sharing activities and ideas to go along with the books.

To join in, you need to create an account at MemeTales.  Then, you can read books on your computer or you can download an app for your iphone, ipad, Android, Nook, or Kindle Fire.  I downloaded the app on my Android phone.  Aiden and I chose several books to read (or have read to us).  Two of his favorites were Alphabet (cute rhyming book with animals and objects that begin with each letter of the alphabet) and The Moon and the Cap (story of a boy who loses his hat).  It comes with 20 books when you create your account.  During the readathon, you will have access to a different set of books each week.  Here are the weekly themes:

• Week 1 – Animal Fun
• Week 2 – Friendship
• Week 3 – Character Development
• Week 4 – Imagination
• Week 5 – The Green Earth
• Week 6 – Global Cultures

I love the theme choices and am excited to read the books with Aiden and share activities with you!
