Valentine’s Day Math Game: Add Ten

I made this game for first grader Aiden to practice adding and subtracting ten. It was also good writing practice. We play a lot of math games, but we don’t always practice writing the numbers. He liked writing the numbers in the hearts with a pink pen.

Roll 2 dice and write the numbers in the middle heart. If you roll the numbers 3 and 4, then write the number 34. I had to explain this to Aiden. He rolled 3 and 4 and wanted to write 7 in the heart. I’m glad he was subitizing and immediately saw 7 from the dots on the dice. However, we want bigger numbers, so we need to treat the dice separately for this activity. Be sure to tell your kids how to do this step.

Add 10 to your number and write the sum in the heart on the right. (Aiden wrote 44.) Subtract 10 from your number and write the difference in the heart on the left. (Aiden wrote 24.)

Keep rolling the dice, adding ten, and subtracting ten to fill in all of the hearts.
