Truffula Tree Math Games Inspired by Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax

The Lorax is one of my personal favorite Dr. Seuss books because of the environmental message. It’s such a great lesson we all need to learn. I was quite impressed that even my 3 year old understands this. He is quick to point out all of the bad things done to the animals in the book. I created this truffula tree math game to connect with the book. Affiliate links are included in this post.

My favorite quote from The Lorax: UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, it’s not going to get better. It’s not. That sums up conservation and caring for our Earth pretty well.

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot..." quote from The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

This is why the truffula tree math game is all about planting truffula trees.

Create the Truffula Trees

Materials:

  • black and yellow striped fuzzy sticks {aka pipe cleaners}
  • assorted colors of pom poms {jumbo size}
  • hot glue
  • green play dough {leftover from our Green Eggs and Ham}
  • numbered milk caps or number cards
  • cap or card with +/- signs.

Cut the striped fuzzy sticks into thirds. Hot glue pom poms onto the fuzzy sticks.

Play a Number Recognition Game

Roll out some green play dough. Choose a number from the pile. Plant that number of truffula trees in the green play dough counting aloud as you plant. Chop down your truffula trees counting as you take them away. Choose another number and plant again.

Flip the +/- milk cap. If the + sign is on top, choose another number and add that many truffula trees to be planted. If the – sign is on top, choose another number and subtract that many truffula trees to be chopped down.
