The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons

Gail Gibbons is June’s featured author for the Virtual Book Club for Kids. We have been enjoying reading lots of her books lately. (You can read more about them through my Amazon affiliate links that follow). Owls was by far Aiden’s favorite. He really wanted to go owling {searching for owls}. We went to 3 different locations on 3 different evenings, but never heard an owl not even on the night we went camping… We will continue our search for owls. We also enjoy reading about The Planets, Ducks!, Ladybugs, Sea Turtles, and more! Aiden had a special connection to The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons. He just loves his apple tree in our front yard.

Most of Gail Gibbons books are non-fiction, but there are a few you can find in the fiction section. The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Tree is one of those books. In the book, you follow a boy named Arnold and his apple tree through the changing seasons. Aiden connects with Arnold because we have an apple tree. As we read the story, he mentions the tree: Our apple tree looks like that. Our apple tree had flowers. Our tree had snow.

The Seasons of Aiden’s Apple Tree

We have taken pictures of Aiden’s apple tree through every season. Most of the pictures have been on Instagram. I gathered them all together. Aiden and I looked through them and talked about the seasons {just like Gail Gibbons does in her book}.

Learning about the Seasons

I had Aiden place the pictures in order according to their season. I wrote down the words Autumn/Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer. We talked about which season came after the next. I asked Aiden what season we are in now. I laminated the pictures with contact paper so Aiden could carry them around and continue to play with them.

Apple Tree Investigations

Last fall we did some investigations with our apple tree. Our A to Z Science series for toddlers an preschoolers started with A is for Apple Tree Investigation. We looked at the tree and compared it to another one beside it. We looked at the fruit on the ground versus the fruit on the trees. We also did an apple investigation to see if our apples were ripe.
