When you think of fall you might think of apples. And if you think of children’s books about apples, Ten Apples Up On Top! surely makes your list. It’s a classic. The three animals are trying to see how many apples they can stack on their heads each one stacking one more than the last.

We had to try stacking apples, too. I made some red play dough following my favorite no cook play dough recipe from The Imagination Tree. We created apples from the play dough by rolling balls. Then, I set up this little invitation to explore. Our work surface is freezer paper.

We counted the apples as we stacked them. Sometimes the stack fell and we tried again.

We made smaller apples and tried to stack them as well. Could we stack smaller apples higher than bigger apples? This was a great opportunity to talk about size difference. We worked on vocabulary words like bigger and smaller. Which one of the apples is the same size as this apple? After the apple stacking activity, we also sorted the apples into different sized piles.

Use play dough apples to compare sizes and work on sorting skills.
