Picture Clue Scavenger Hunt

Our countdown to Christmas continues for day 7 of Advent. I’m sharing a Christmas science idea with you at the beginning of each day until Christmas. Day 7’s activity is a Picture Clue Scavenger Hunt.

Picture Clue Scavenger Hunt

We have been enjoying all of our Christmas science activities so far. Aiden’s favorite activity was becoming a Christmas detective. He wanted to create his own scavenger hunt for his dad to follow.

Aiden wanted me to write more clues like I did with our first hunt. I asked him if he wanted to draw picture clues instead. He liked the idea of picture clues, but didn’t think he could draw them. I suggested we trace cookie cutters.

Aiden picked out cookie cutters that would represent locations in our house.

Then, he attempted to trace them in his journal. The pen he had wasn’t working for him, so he tried colored pencils. He gave it a good effort, but the cookie cutters kept moving on him.

I held down the cookie cutters and helped him trace them. {We could have gotten the paint out and made cookie cutter prints with paint. Aiden can do that without my help.}

Aiden wanted written words on the clues like we had before. I compromised and wrote 1-2 words on each clue {the name of the object or what it represented}. Then, we cut out the clues.

We placed the first clue in Day 7’s envelope of our Advent tree. Aiden’s first clue was a Christmas tree, so he placed the second clue on the big Christmas tree. {There are 3 clues on our Christmas tree. One is on a random branch; another is next to a heart ornament, and the third is at the top under the star.}

The clue on the tree branch is a picture of a truck. Aiden placed the next clue inside his biggest toy truck.

The next clue goes in Daddy’s sock drawer.

We continued placing clues around the house. One clue was of a boot. It leads to Aiden’s boots where a plane clue is next.

The last clue is a candy cane. Aiden decided the prize at the end of the scavenger hunt is a candy cane.

This activity would also be a great way to create a scavenger hunt for kids who can’t read yet or for kids who are working on sight words. The picture clues take them on an adventure around the house and they still need to use reasoning skills to find the clues.
