Party Hat Sight Word Matching Game {Laura Numeroff Virtual Book Club for Kids}

Laura Numeroff is January’s featured author for the Virtual Book Club for Kids. Laura Numeroff was a new author for us and we really enjoy her books. Aiden particularly loves all of the If You Give… series starting with If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. I created a Party Hat Sight Word Matching Game to go along with If You Give a Pig a Party. If You Give a Pig a Party by Laura Numeroff

If You Give a Pig a Party was one of our favorites from Laura Numeroff this month. I think the pig is simply adorable. Follow her around as she goes from one activity to another {just like the rest of the books in the series} ultimately returning back to the party. At the beginning of the book, there is a picture of the pig standing a top a stack of party hats. This inspired me to create an activity with party hats.

Party Hat Sight Word Matching Game

Aiden turned four last month. He knows the alphabet and letter sounds, so I wanted to begin work with sight words. This sight word matching game is my first attempt.

I cut out party hats from a square piece of scrapbook paper. I folded the paper in half a few times until I had the size hat I liked. Then I cut one hat out of the folded paper. This gave me 8 hats from each paper {and a cool paper star}.

There are several lists of beginning sight words out there. I printed 2 copies of the Early Emergent Word cards Teach Mama used for her Fish Out of Water Sight Word Game. They were the perfect size for our party hats.

I chose 12 words from the list to start our game. To make it even easier, I created 3 sets of words – one color for each set. I glued the words to the party hats. I placed the pronouns on orange, the verbs on pink, and the other words on green.

Aiden placed one color of hats on the table. He chose one hat. I read the word to him and asked him to find the match. He spelled out the letters in the word. I had him repeat the name of the word as well.

The second time we played, I asked him to read the words. He wasn’t quite ready for that, so we read them together as before. With repetition, the goal is for him to recognize the words himself. After his dad got home from work, Aiden pulled the game out to play with him. They played while I made dinner. After a while, Aiden recognized a few of the words. We will pull this game out every once in a while and practice these words some more. When he’s got a good handle on these words, I’ll add in some new words {and maybe a new game}.

Get Moving

It would be easy to add movement to this game just like we did for our Letter Sounds Race. Place one set of words on one side of the room and the matching set on the other side of the room. Grab one word and run to find it’s match on the other side of the room.
