One Fish Two Fish Size Sorting Activity

This size sorting activity is inspired by One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss. Aiden asked me to make fish for him to create a matching game (more on that later). I made the fish too small for his liking. He requested larger fish. That gave me an idea for a measuring activity. Affiliate links are included in this post. One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish is a classic Dr. Seuss book. It has lots of random characters, but what else would one expect from a book that begins “From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere.” Everyone loves the silliness of Seuss.

 

One Fish Two Fish Size Sorting Activity

You’ll Need:

• paper
• marker
• scissors
• ruler

Draw fish of various sizes (or have your child draw the fish). Cut them out. (Aiden kept cutting the tails off of his fish, so your child may need help with this step, too.)

We sorted our fish into two piles: longer than 3 inches and shorter than 3 inches. I did the activity first and modeled my thinking.  I drew a line on the paper. This is 3 inches. I picked up a small fish. This fish is pretty small so I think it is shorter than 3 inches. I checked the fish against the 3 inch line I drew. Yes. It is shorter than 3 inches.

I asked Aiden to choose a fish and predict if it was longer or shorter than 3 inches. He would make a decision. Then, he checked it against the ruler or the 3 inch line..

All of the shorter fish swam to one pool.

All of the longer fish swam to the other pool.

Some of the fish were obviously shorter and some were obviously longer.

Others he had to measure more closely to determine where they belonged.

You can also sort the fish by size from shortest to longest.

I love how quick and easy this activity was to set up. It’s such a fun way to practice measuring and looking at sizes.
