A Letter to My Middle Child

As I write this letter, the baby is sleeping and the toddler (the middle child) is resting on the couch with a fever. It’s days like today that remind me of just how little she still is. And yet at other times, she seems so grown up – her vocabulary is expanding and she tries to do everything her big brother does. This letter to my middle child reminds me to appreciate who she is.

A Letter to My Middle Child

Dear Middle Child,

I’m sorry you are no longer the baby, but I want you to know that you will always be my baby. I will always be there to snuggle and hold you even if you have to take turns with your brothers.

I’m sorry that you have to share my attention with not one but two siblings, but I want you to know that they will always be there for you.

Your older brother looks out for you even though he thinks you’re kind of annoying sometimes. You will look out for your younger brother and probably find him annoying at times, too.

Your younger brother will look up to you the way you look up to your older brother. I find it adorable how you follow your big brother around and want to be just like him. Your little brother will want to follow you around and do everything you do, too.

I’m sorry you don’t get the privilege of being the first to do something, but I want you to know that it is still just as exciting to see your firsts, too.

I’m sorry you are constantly being compared to the oldest, but I want you to know that it is out of love and concern.

I’m sorry the baby overshadows some of your milestones, but I want you to know that you are important. You are loved. You are unique. You are kind. You are thoughtful. You are sweet. You are my daughter.

You are my middle child.

Love,
Mama

P.S. As I finish this letter, the baby is waking up and the toddler has fallen asleep.
