Inch by Inch is a fun little book about an inchworm. The inchworm is about to get eaten by a robin. The inchworm convinces the robin not to eat him because he is useful – he can measure things. The robin has the inchworm measure his tail. The robin is so impressed that he takes the inchworm to other birds that need to be measured. At the end of the book, the inchworm is spotted by a nightingale. The nightingale tells the inchworm to measure his song. Perplexed the inchworm wonders what to do. The inchworm comes up with a very clever solution.

Measuring Practice

Inch by Inch was a great springboard for some measuring practice. We grabbed a ruler and headed outside. I helped Aiden practice measuring things in our backyard. We measured flowers, rocks, plant containers, our dog’s ear, a stuffed penguin’s wing, a roly poly, a strawberry, and more.

When measuring, remember to teach your child how to use the ruler. Place the edge of the ruler or the zero mark on the ruler at the end of the object to be measured. {For many rulers, the edge of the ruler is the zero mark, but for some, there is an actual 0 line.}
